Modern SEO content writing

If there is one element of web marketing that has a bad name, it is copywriting. Everyone thinks they can write okay and the low standards set by Google’s algorithm caused some shocking passages of text to be committed to web pages.

For some time, an entire industry was built to exploit the limitations of computer analysis of written language. Firms were established to crank out near useless articles in large volume in pursuit of revenue from advertising. If certain keywords appeared frequently enough in the text, these pages would crop up in search results and this would provide visitors and revenue.

The mass production of poor quality articles was known as ‘content farming’. Content farms are less common now thanks to improvements in search engines calculations, but the effects remain. There are plenty of people working in search engine optimisation who still don’t understand the importance of good writing and might not even be able to identify it.

‘Waffle’ should be avoided at all costs. Writing for the web means writing clearly, originally and concisely. Web users don’t like to read long passages of text, so it’s important to get to the point as quickly as possible.

It is not just about considering Google when you write. You should firstly think of your users. It is vital to keep in mind how your site is used by people. If you sell a range of items, you need to tell people about them and you also need to persuade them to buy your products.

Modern web writing has little in common with the functional approach of a few years ago. The smarter computers get, the more it is about writing for users. Writers aim to influence their readers and to make it easy for them to work out what each web page is about and what they can do on it.
